Polana Kitasoo Spirit Bear "Kitti"

Here is a slideshow of Kitti from my first photos of her as a puppy up until now. I believe her personality radiates in every photo. Everyone who meets Kitti loves her. She is definitely my most playful female Coton.  A real little Charlie Brown...a little mischievous. It was no surprise to me that she turned out to be a very good mommy with her puppies.

It has been a year since the last litter and we are breeding Kitasoo again in May 2012. I hope you enjoy this slideshow as much as I enjoyed making it ♥

Veg to Bowl

Conversation about Veg to Bowl was recently discussed on my Coton de Tulear Facebook Group The feedback was very positive. That resulted in me looking into the product and emailing the company to learn more.

You can learn more by visiting Dr. Harvey's website or you can watch this video on YouTube that explains how to use the product. I am intrigued and intend to purchase some in the very near future.

If you live in Canada you can contact their Distributor in Canada Canadian Holistic Pet Care Company 45905 Yale Road Chilliwack B.C. There phone number is 877-477-5077. You can give them a call and ask where stores in your area carry the food. Or you can go onto there web site at to place your order.

Polana Kitasoo Spirit Bear

Kitasoo also know as "Kitti" arrived home from Nova Scotia in April 2009. She comes from one of Canada's finest breeders Marie France Prayal's Polana Kennel. I spent a week in Nova Scotia to take in all of the beauty of that Province and truly enjoyed meeting with Marie France Prayal. Kitasoo has without a doubt the most gentle spirited nature that you can possibly have in a Coton. My husband has taken ownership over her...she is his favorite and I can say she is usually in his lap watching tv at night. In the picture you see her sitting..I call it her 'freeze bear" because she will sit like that for the longest time. She lets me know she wants something by sitting like this beside me and raising her ears straight out. I call this her helicopter ears I almost expect her to fly. She is very precious and everyone who meets her immediately loves her loving nature. If you have seen a man in the grocery store with a little white dog in the child's seat that probably is my husband. It is amazing to me that they never say anything.. oh dear!!

And just so that you can capture the energy of an adult Coton and a Coton puppy here is Kitasoo playing outside the summer of 2009 shortly after she came to live with us. Kitasoo "Kitty" always wins!! This was her toy lobster she brought home from Halifax!

Cuteberry at Spirit Bear Coton de Tulears

Spirit Bear Cotons puppies.....
This is a video of puppies from my last litter from Esprit de Tulear Spirit Bear "Cody" and Polana Kitsoo Spirit Bear. Cuteberry was born at 4 ounces and remains a very small Coton. She is now 9 months old as of this posting March 8th, 2012 and weighs 5 1/2 lbs. Cuteberry is a beautiful little girl who was born with a cleft pallet. Her story of survival is one that I am always ready to share. We love her to pieces and she remains living with us. This is one of those rare situations that can occur in a breeding program but I have learned so much from this experience I do not see it as a negative. I hope you enjoy this little video of Cuteberry and her two siblings Sonny and Sassy. Enjoy. I'm so sure you will get a giggle by her funny little Cuteberry noises and if you have dogs in the house I am sure her talking with capture their attention! In case this video sparks your interest in a Coton puppy I am planning for puppies to be born early July.2012.

Grooming and Caring for Coton de Tulear book!

I am re-posting about the newest book on "Grooming your Coton de Tulear" I posted about this on February 8th if you look back on the blog. It is being ordered by owners and breeders of Coton de Tulears all over the world. Be sure to get your order in early! So much to learn and now we have a new helpful learning tool.

This book has been written in a joint partnership that brings Brigitte Jespersen  one of the world's leading breeders of the Coton De Tulear together with Helle Sydendal a journalist who also happens to own two Coton De Tulears.Together they poured their passion for this beautiful breed into a easy to read book that I expect will be purchased by Coton owners all over the world and perhaps by owners of other long hair breeds as well.  To order your copy visit

Espirt de Tulear Spirit Bear "Cody"

I was thinking how funny it is that I talk about products, how to groom etc and so rarely post a photo of my dogs. I purchased my first Coton de Tulear in 2006 and it is because of the joy he brought into  my life that I now own three other beautiful Cotons. Cody is very easily dominated by the girls in the house.
He pretends to be in charge but is always the gentleman. Cody is a very pretty Coton and loves being the only boy in the house. Here is a photo of him just hangin around....ok so I helped him for this photo shoot, but he hung on tight until I picked him up and put him on the ground which was only about 8 inches away! Just remember once you buy one Coton you are just one step away from owning two! My website is still in the works but we are making some progress check it out Spirit Bear Cotons

Cody loves to pose for photos.

Raw Diet transition going very well!

It's been about four months now since I made the decision to convert my dogs to a RAW diet. I did  it gradually and carefully. The transition has been 100% successful. No stomach issues or loose stools. Nothing worse than a soft stool getting caught in the Coton hair. I call this a Coton blow out. I started out with the small pucks and now buy both the large  raw patties and the small pucks. I recently purchased the RAW DAILY BOOST freeze dried raw Powder Supplement. This is product is amazing. I take a tablespoon and pour it over the dry kibble. It sticks to the kibble and my dogs are crunching away happily. They eat this in the morning and then in the afternoon I give them one puck each and then in the evening I am give them raw again. But I cut a big patty into six small pieces put it on a plate and cut some frozen green beans and carrots over top that is what their dinner. I should add that I give them mostly green beans and only a few pieces of carrot. The green beans are very good VITAMIN B but also are known for reducing tear staining. A good treat in itself for you dog is a few frozen green beans.
There are many raw diets out there... this is the one that I have chosen to make the transition with and  I intend to try some others... in the coming months. I should add that my dogs like chicken so that is the flavor that I am consistent with. To learn more about Nature's Variety product line you can go here.

Specially commissioned treat jar for Sammie!

What a great idea!

This treat jar was made for one of my favorite Coton de Tulears
CH Fluffy Acres' Sammie Napoleon "Sammie" owned by Leslie Leeb Machado by her friend Meredith London-Orgiefsky. The jar was ordered when he was a puppy, I think a great idea to treasure those precious puppy moments.

Leslie told me she uses the jar all the time it is not an ornament and has given them away as gifts.

If you like this you could order one here.

The perfect "Top Knot"

Have you ever wondered how to keep the hair on top of the head as healthy as possible? Have you tried various techniques and only ended up breaking the hair? Here is a photo example by Brigitte Jesperson and co-author Helle Sydnedal of Grooming and Caring for your Coton de Tulear  and a brief explanation on how  to create the perfect topknot.

"Please take a look at Ari in the photo. Make two top knots and secure each with an elastic then take another elastic and secure the two top knots together."

To remove them use a pair of narrow scissors like below and allow the scissors to cut the elastic by the sharpness of the blade.
To learn more grooming techniques you can order the new book

Spectrum TEN Hypro Pac by Chris Christensen

Love this product! ♥
I few months ago at a dog show I had the opportunity to take advantage of a promotional offer offered by Chris Christensen systems that gave the purchaser two bottle of shampoo and this Spectrum Ten Hypo Pac. I had not used either the following shampoo or conditioner before but was eager to give them a try. I found them to be very effective and that resulted in me having a WINNING weekend taking home points on two of my dogs. Can't get much better than that. Since then I have to say they are right up their for me in my top five favorites

Spectrum Ten Shampoo for Soft & Smooth Coats
Gently cleanses and shines for a beautiful flowing coat

Spectrum Ten Conditioner for Soft & Smooth Coats
Ultra-smoothing, humidity-fighting lightweight conditioner

Spectrum Ten Hypro Pac Intensive Treatment...

Spectrum Ten Hypro Pac Intensive Treatment provides the ultimate in conditioning for dry, brittle, damaged coats.  However, while it is an ideal deep treatment for soft, fine coats, it is also wonderful on all coat types.  It delivers deep moisturizing and conditioning components with the least amount of weight to any coat.  It is great on any mature dropped coat that is showing signs of weathering.  Yes, it softens, but that is the trade off for mega moisturizing.  It is also a terrific detangler, aiding in the breaking apart of the most discouraging mat balls, such as those that form behind the ears of Bichons Frises.  It can be used to demat on wet or dry coat, without leaving a greasy residue.  Work a dab of Hypro Pac into a serious mat and pick apart with a extra coarse comb.  To learn more about the the shampoo conditioner and Spectrum Ten Hypro Pac see more here

**New - Grooming and caring for your Coton de Tulear

As the moderator of the Coton de Tulear Facebook Group for four years now and also of this blog I can assure you that questions around grooming come up over and over again. Everyone wants to know the secret to maintaining a beautiful Coton. For the dedicated select few who show their Cotons globally it is common knowledge that we all have a collection of brushes and products that would be shocking to the owner of a short haired breed. I often hear from companion owners who are frustrated because they don't know what they are doing wrong. They often express they do not have the knowledge base to know what to do when they run into grooming challenges. This is why it is so exciting to see a new educational tool on "Grooming and Caring for your Coton de Tulear."

I would also like to add that
Brigitte Jespersen of Kennel Jespersen is also known as one of the most successful breeders in the showring - among her many other titles, she is twice a World Champion. Here is a beautiful photo of FlamenCoton Bahiya Junior World Champion 2009 and then World Champion in 2010. From my perspective she is as stunning as they come.

Both of these ladies can be found on Facebook if you would like to add them as a friend. Just click on their names Brigitte Jesperson and Helle Sydendal to go to their Facebook pages. The book can be ordered online through paypal by visiting their website And don't forget to "LIKE" their Coton Grooming Facebook Fan Page if you find this information helpful

I would love to hear feed back from you once you have received your copy. Have fun reading.. best of luck to Brigitte and Helle on the success of your new venture and congratulation on the printing of your, shall I say....first book.

Have you massaged your dog today?

Gabby is most 9 months old. She has always been a calm puppy but it has taken some time to get her to stay when I call her and want to pick her up. Puppy reaction go the other way. Not good for person in bent over position ready to pick up puppy. To overcome this I try to spend some one on one time with her everyday. I have found that by sitting with her and massaging her that it helps build trust between her the puppy and me the owner with a bad back who doesn't want puppy to run away when I pick her up.

A friend of mine recently sent me the link to this video on massaging a dog from I was very pleased to see this as it provided some additional massage techniques I think are not only good for the average dog but a puppy who is growing. Animal therapy is good for the dog but also calming to the owner who enjoys seeing their animal smile.

#1 All Systems Pure White Lightening

Do you have challenges getting your dogs feet clean?
Do you have yellow urine stains on the belly?
Dirty mustaches?

This is one of the products that I have personally tired and had immediate results. I use this on my dogs feet and belly particularly just before showing because I can get the whitest results with this product. I do not use it on my dogs ENTIRE coat as I do not want to take the chance that it can be drying. Once you dry out a coat it can take months to gain back what you lost from a shampoo that drys out the coat. I have not taken the chance with this product because I think it is possible on a Coton coat to have that effect.

After using the shampoo I use an intense conditioner on the belly and the feet to be sure we have clean but soft hair on those areas. I have used this on the moustache with very positive results and again use a conditioner after apply and rinsing the shampoo. You must be very careful and not get this in your dogs eyes. This is not to be used on the muzzle by the inexperienced my opinion. Click on the link to learn more about #1 All Systems White Lightening

Red flag alert to Canadians looking for Coton de Tulears

Red Flag to Canadian buyers looking to purchase a Coton de Tulear  puppy.

Canadian buyers please be careful when considering purchasing a Coton de Tulear from websites selling puppies that are simply advertising brokered puppies.

  • You should consider that websites offering to ship you a puppy from a long distance is not a normal ethical breeder's practice.
  • You should consider that when importing a puppy into Canada you are subject to importing duties. You are always best to purchase from an ethical breeder.
  • A website that does not list the name of the breeder or kennel name is likely a puppy broker whose sole purpose is to sell puppies. These puppies come from unknown sources, likely puppy mills or even worse puppy auctions.
  • A website that states that the puppy has been health tested means very little if you do not know the health history of the parents. Serious health issues such as patella or hips cannot be determined until the puppy is one year old. Without knowing the history of the parents you could easily purchase a puppy with a serious genetic health issue that will not show up until the dog is older.
  • The purchaser in Canada has no guarantee of health protection being that puppy broker websites come and go.
  • Should your puppy experience health issues at anytime either upon arrival or later in life you cannot be 100% certain that this company would replace a puppy. It is possible that you contact the company in six months and they no longer exist. Sadly sick puppies end up at the SPCA or put to sleep and the buyer is out of pocket for their financial investment.
A Canadian trying to recoup money from an out of country puppy broker website should consider these negative outcomes of making an out of country purchase through a puppy broker website vs. an ethical breeder who can provide you legitimate registration papers, parents pedigree and the health history of both parents etc.

To validate these concerns I would like to share with you a news broadcast on the Today See the YouTube news story here

Les Pooches MattZapper

If you own a Coton de Tulear you will ultimately at one time or another get a mat. The Les Pooches emergency MattZapper  brush has been highly recommended time and time again. I have been told by breeders who show their Coton de Tulear's that they are careful using it and very satisfied with their results. For companion owners it can be the difference between saving your dogs longer coat and having to cut your dog back. We all have challenging moments grooming our Cotons but with patience, practice and the right tools they do become less stressful.
